How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

Through baseline assessment and periodic screening we identify those pupils who have potential barriers to learning. These barriers may impair a child from making progress and may be considered as having additional needs to make that progress. Initial discussions take place with the school’s leadership, including the school’s Inclusion Manager and parents become involved as approriate.

Parents may have intial concerns regarding their child’s progress and should raise these with the child’s class teacher in the first instance.

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

If a parent/carer thinks that their child has special educational needs they should share this view with the school. This would normally be initially with the class teacher.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

The provision for all children is planned and delivered by class teachers.  Sometimes support staff and other qualified teachers may be involved. Planning for all children is undertaken by the class teacher. Planning and provision for those with statements and Education, Health and Care Plans is coordinated by the Inclusion Manager. Support staff may assist in the delivery of some plans and are responsible back to the class teacher for the activities they undertake. The process for planning and provision is explained by the classteacher and/or Inclusion Manager during either plan review meetings or parent meetings.

The Governing Body has statutory duties for the provision of pupils with special eduicational needs.  They receive a report termly from the Head Teacher regarding the nature and perfoamce of special educational needs pupils.  An SEN Information Report is produced annually on behalf of the Governing Body.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

Curriculum match is achieved through Individual Education Plans, Learning Journal and Observation, Assessment and Planning processes.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

We provide termly reports and an annual report  to parents/carers. We provide an opportunity to discuss progress of your child’s learning three times a year.

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

We provide a Personal, Social and Health Education curriculum which includes emotional health. We provide a Pastoral Manager and other support staff who enable enhanced provision for emotional wellbeing.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

There are no specialist services based at St Margaret’s.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

All staff receive annual generic training in the identification of special educational needs and in meeting common needs, for example dyslexia.

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

The school will endeavour full inclusive practices including school trips whenever this is practicable and safe.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

The complete building is fully accessible for wheelchair use.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

SEN preparation and transfer is coordinated by the Inclusion Manager to ensure children are prepared and supported for their transition to and from the school.  Each situation is developed in a bespoke manner.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

The SEN budget is allocated according to the collective and individual needs of children in the school.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Decisions about support are made in consultation with parents, however the needs of the collective and individual children will be the determining factors within the resources available.
