Schools Extended Local Offer Response

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

At the Pre-school, each child has a designated key person. Their role is to build up  a relationship with parents and carers, to provide the trust needed to share personal information. We do this by sharing their learning journals, trackers, and communication books if they attend another setting.  If you have any concerns, with the development of your child, you can contact the Special Education Needs Coordinator (SENCo). We work within the SEN code of Practice guidelines.

We carry out a 2 ½ yr check, or a starting point assessment on all children, to follow the EYFS guidelines

Regular observations and assessments are made on every individual child, and are linked to the appropriate ages and stages of development within our tracker system. This, in some cases, will identify any individual needs which we will then act upon. We would talk to you about this, and plan any specific support needed for your child’s learning and development.

We welcome health care professionals, parents and carers sharing reports to meet any individual needs.

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

The keyworker would liase with one of our SENCo’s who would determine the right course of action needed. With your permission, we would  observe the child, and then meet with you, to discuss the next step.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

Every child will be supported initially by their keyworker, with support from all staff and the SENCo and Managers. Observations are carried out which would contribute to their Educational Health and Care Plan (EHC). The child’s keyperson and SENCo would over see the targets on the EHC. These are always available for you to view, and are stored securely, locked away after each session. The Manager will maintain an overview of progress, and the SENCo will work with all staff to ensure we are providing all appropriate support.

We will work in partnership with you, reviewing the EHC targets, every 6 weeks and plan new ones together. We will also develop strategies for you to use at home.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

We would invite you to an introductory visit to assess appropriate resources relevant to your child’s individual needs. We would ask for any assessments from outside professionals, before the child starts.

Our keyperson and SENCo work together to ensure the curriculum, environment and overall setting is meeting your needs. We will support your individual needs by using the Educational Health and Care Plan (EHC).

We follow the childs needs and interests, and carry out regular observations and then base our planning on these interests to adhere to the EYFS curriculum. Verbal feed back is always given at the end of every session, as well as the communication booklets to other settings.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

We promote an open door policy and encourage a good relationship with all parents/carers. We give parents/carers the opportunity to help on their childs sessions to give them a valuable insite into their learning. We would provide daily feedback, and newsletters go our regularly. These are displayed outside pre-school, are emailed to all parents/carers and are published on our website.

Notices are put on the front door as to what is happening daily, and what the weekly snack plan is.

We have an open afternoon, where any prospective parents/carers can come and meet the Managers, or personal visits are offered to come and visit the pre-school during the sessions.

With our EYFS tracker system we will assess every child’s educational and personal staring points, and carry out transitional meetings with all schools involved.

We offer a ‘chance to chat’ afternoon or evening, for the children getting Ready for School.

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

Medic alerts are highlighted on your child’s welcome pack, and we will therefore follow our Medical policy to ensure the correct course of action, before your child starts with us.

We provide positive role models to encourage positive behavior and are consistent in all the day to day care of all our children. We are all first aid trained, and will educate all staff in any additional training needed to meet your individual needs.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

At Grappenhall Pre School we have one Manager and one staff member who are SENCo trained. Additionally we have staff who are first aid  and paediatric first aid trained.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

Our setting would access training to meet any individual needs and would cascade this information to all staff.

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

Parents/carers would be involved in all outside trips, organising risk assessments and any practical help needed. Our trip ratio is 1:2 but we would provide a 1:1 for any child who needed support.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

We are in the process of reviewing the settings wheelchair access.

We would receive any information from English as an Additional Language (EAL). Any additional equipment would have to be purchased within our financial budget, with permission from the committee. We would then train all staff to use the specific equipment.

This equipment would then be stored securely at night.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

We ask the parents/carers to firstly fill in the Welcome pack, which would highlight any additional needs, training, outside agencies involvement and transition from another setting.

We provide a ready for school term in which we forge strong links to every child’s reception class. We carry out numerous visits to the local primary school, and the reception teachers come into Pre-school  and carry out activities with all children.

Your child’s developmental tracker will be passed onto their Reception class teachers, and their learning journals will be given to you. A verbal feedback transition will be given to the teachers of your child’s next setting.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

As a charity, we have limited budgets to allow for equipment expenditure. All our equipment is age and stage appropriate, however, specialist equipment would have to be funded.

Through the observation process, linked to the EYFS stages of development, and in discussion with you , the Keyperson and SENCo will identify what support is required.

Regular staff meetings will ensure all staff are aware of  your child’s strengths and needs and will know how to support them.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

Keyworker observations would be taken to the Manager and SENCo, who would then discuss with you any concerns. Your permission would be sought before any contact is made with outside agencies.

Health Visitors and support from local children centres, would be shared with you and any other carers involved.
