Schools Extended Local Offer Response

How does the setting/school/college know if children/young people need extra help and what should I do if I think my child/young person may have special educational needs?

Our staff team consists of qualified and experienced staff and follow the EYFS guidelines when planning activities and experiences. We have a staff member who has undergone ECaT training and we use language development checks to assess children’s speech and language ability and needs.

Every child is allocated a Key Worker who will become familiar with each child in their group and get to know their abilities, strengths and weaknesses. Termly Summaries of learning and development are completed for all children, as well as a check at two years old which can be shared with Health Visitor and other professionals.

We use a variety of methods for ongoing observations in order that each child’s development is tracked. If these observations highlight any weaknesses in Development the Key Worker will in the first instance put activities in place through the planning in order to allow children to practice specific skills and build on their weakness. Every child has a Learning Journey which is put together by their Key Worker and sent home regularly to be shared with other family members.

When needs are identified we have other professionals, including Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, SALT etc, visit the setting to offer advice to staff and undertake sessions with children. Any recommendations or activities that can be conducted in the setting can be carried out by staff.

How will early years setting/school/college staff support my child/young person?

Staff are available at the start and end of every session to share information and chat about your child’s day. We operate an open door policy and your child’s Key Worker will discuss any concerns at your convenience. The Nursery Director and SENCo will be able to offer advice and information on any aspect of individual and special need and to assist in the referral to other agencies if required. The photographs, qualifications and roles of all staff are displayed so that you will be aware of who has contact with your child and how they can help.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child's/young person's needs?

Your child’s Key Worker will plan a suitable individual education programme based on any recommendations from other professionals involved in your child’s care and development, which will be agreed by you before being putting into place. The SENCo will be available to advise the Key Worker on what to include, and all other staff members working with the group will be aware of any care, development and learning needs required on a daily basis.

How will both you and I know how my child/young person is doing and how will you help me to support my child's/young person's learning?

Planning for every age group is based on the interests and needs of the children in each group with next steps also included. For children who require further differentiation then an education plan will be put into place based on advice and recommendations from other agencies involved in the care and development of your child. Every child has a Learning Journey document containing observations of learning and development during their time here. Processes are in place in order to track learning and developmental progress for each child in order to highlight areas of need.

What support will there be for my child's/young person's overall well being?

A process of ongoing observation and assessment is carried out at the setting. The Learning Journey is a collection of these observations. The Key Worker also sets termly targets for each child which consist of small achievable steps in order that each child is encouraged and supported to progress onto the next stage in their development. The Key Worker also completes a termly summary of Learning and Development which is used as a tool to track developmental progress across all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage.

We operate an open door policy and encourage parents and carers to chat and share information about their child on a daily basis.

We operate flexible transitioning between rooms if required. Some children can do short visits before moving into the next room if this is what would work best for them. Other children benefit from moving straight into the next group as visits may confuse them. The transition is always preceded by the current Key Worker sharing the Learning Journey and any other relevant information with the new Key Worker.

We hold an annual Parents Evening where you will be invited to speak to the Key Worker and other staff without the children on the premises during which your child’s Key Worker will provide you with a summary of their learning and development.

What specialist services and expertise are available at or accessed by the setting/school/college?

Every child is treated as an individual with support offered on a needs assessed basis. Medication can be administered following completion of an Administration of Medicines form. If medication to be administered requires specific training or expertise then this will be sought from other agencies and professionals prior to use.

We have a Behaviour Management Policy in place which all staff adhere to and parents and carers are made aware of prior to their child joining us. We have a designated Behaviour Management Officer who will liaise with families when behaviour issues have been identified. We believe that collaboration and consistency are key to ensure every child is aware of their boundaries and positive behaviour is promoted through the use of role modeling, praise and encouragement.

What training have the staff supporting children and young people with SEND had? Are any being trained currently?

Other professionals visit the setting to conduct sessions such as Occupational Therapy or physiotherapy, as well as advising and directing the staff on exercises and activities. We operate a needs led training schedule, so additional staff training will be sought out when required for a specific need of individual children.

We have an ECaT Lead Practitioner who focuses on speech and language development and activities within the setting.

The SENCo attends ongoing training specific to the role.

How will my child/young person be included in activities outside this classroom including school trips?

A high percentage of our staff are qualified at a full and relevant Level 3 or higher. Our SENCo has received specific training based around SEND and the Code of Practice. All staff have received Epilepsy training including how to administer rescue medicine.

Our Equality and Diversity Officer has received full and up to date training on Inclusion.

Training is sought on a needs led basis depending on the individual needs of the children in our care at the time. If a child with a specific medical or developmental need will be attending the setting then training will be obtained at that time.

We have staff who are trained in the use of Makaton for children with communication needs.

There are 14 staff members who are trained in Pediatric First Aid.

How accessible is the setting/school/college environment?

We are willing to make reasonable adjustments to the environment to ensure that all children are able to participate in all activities and experiences that are on offer to the children. The areas that are used by the children are on ground level so are fully accessible. The environment is able to accommodate walking aids, wheelchairs, standing frames etc.

Any trips taken off the premises are only within the local area and are planned beforehand to include the needs of all children.

We are part of the Warrington Inclusion Matters initiative and we believe that children and adults have the right to feel valued and included, and to be free from discrimination of any variety. To us inclusion means that everybody is included, feels part of the group and has a choice over what they take part in. It is our intention to promote and celebrate achievements, success, confidence, skills and progression. We foster an atmosphere of mutual respect in which we can all learn about differences, equality and justice through discussion, play and topics.

How will the setting/school/college prepare and support my child/young person to join the setting/school/college or the next stage of education and life?

All indoor and outdoor areas used by children are on ground level and are fully accessible.

At the moment there is no facility for translation of written communication, but would be researched if required.

How are the setting's/school's/college's resources allocated and matched to children's/young people's special educational needs?

We operate a system of transitional settling visits prior to any child joining the setting. These consist of an initial visit with parents/carers to meet the Key Worker and discuss the child’s needs, routines, likes and dislikes, etc. This is followed by a course of visits where the child stays with us on their own for one or two hours depending on the needs of each child and family.

Other professionals are invited into the setting to see individual children and to assess the need for support or resources where necessary.

Visits can also be arranged to help children cope with transitions between each room as they move through the nursery.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child/young person will receive?

We do not have a budget set for resources. Anything required is sourced on a basis of need. Funding will be applied for if available.

How are parents involved in the setting/school/college? How can I be involved?

All professionals relevant to the child’s care will be involved in decision making. This could include SALT, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, HV’s etc. No decision will be made without consulting parents/carers. Decisions will be made with the best interests of the child in mind at all times.

It is possible to have a meeting with parents/carers, Key Worker, Nursery Director and SENCo if needed to discuss any decisions that need to be made. The Nursery owner will also be consulted throughout the decision making process and may choose to be present during any meeting.
